Season 3, Episode 22 Will the Circle be Unbroken?

There are loved ones in the glory
Whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story,
Will you join them in their bliss?

School

  • Mona uses her compact to spy on the three liars converging by the courtyard. They are still wondering where Spencer had gone to when Melissa and Principal Hackett tell them that she has been missing. Melissa starts asking them, with a slight accusatory tone. And, yes, Mona witnesses the whole thing.

Radley

  • Spencer is visited by a medic, who checks her bandages. She asks what a #302 is and he tells her the rules that lead to the destination of a stray: jail, psych ward, Radley. A #302 allows for a psych evaluation when the medic is unsure if the patient is completely unwell. Spencer is being playfully pleasant (Mmmhmm, she’s faking it).

School

  • The three liars are still talking about Spencer. How they can find her, but to check in with Melissa in case she finds something.

Radley

  • Spencer, still in her room, is playing cards when the Joker card catches her attention. (She is playing with 808 cards. 808 cards are Bicycle-line cards. Notice that the Joker looks like the King of Spades.)

Marin

  • Ashley and Hanna are still discussing the Wilden situation (Ashley gets my vote for ‘parent most likely to end up in jail’ award. I like her but how she handles things perplexes me.).
  • Her phone rings and she tries to avoid Ted’s call. Hanna picks up her phone, makes an excuse, and confirms an unwanted coffee date.

Fitz Apt

  • Aria is at Ezra’s texting the liars that Spencer is not at the bookstore.
  • Ezra is having ‘job issues’. He says that he wants to teach again but is unsure how to go about it. He also tells Aria that he misses her, despite her being there.

Radley

  • Spencer is playing the piano when Dr. Sullivan finds her. She turns around when her name is called and says, “Olly Olly Oxen Free.” (An homage to hide and seek, meaning she has been hiding indeed.)

Church

  • Ashley and Hanna meet Ted in front of the church, which is being renovated. He says that he is very happy with Jaimie Doyle, but Hanna has a worried look on her face.
  • Before leaving for coffee, Wilden arrives (holy crap moment). He appears to be completely unscathed and claims to have been gone fishing (figuratively, of course) for a few days. When Ted asks if he caught something, he says, “No, but that’s the way fishing works. Sometimes you just have to be patient.” Then, he leaves, making the two ladies very worried (as they should be).

Radley

  • Sully is talking to Spencer. She tells Spence that she was called in to evaluate a Jane Doe. She asks Spencer why she didn’t tell them who she was. Spencer says that she lost her bag, which contains her identification, wallet, and phone. She also says that it’s nice not to be Hastings for a bit.
  • Sully asks her what happened in the Woods that made her run. Spencer tells Sully that Toby is dead and she saw the body in the forest. That someone killed him. Sully asks why Spencer didn’t tell the rangers, and appears hesitant to believe that Toby is indeed dead. She tells Sully that someone killed Toby but she is the reason why he’s dead. Sully tells her to stay put as she calls the Hastings and the police.

Montgomery

  • Aria talks to Byron about Ezra. Byron knows about Ezra’s situation because of Ella. Byron asks how Aria is doing with all this. Aria says that…”She’s ok but not ok. Just ok.” (Hmmm. Oook.)
  • She asks her dad to help Ezra find a teaching job. Byron hesitates.
  • Aria then gets a text that Spencer is ok.

Radley

  • Melissa is at Radley, talking to Spencer. She appears distraught (not buying it). The Hastings parents are in Europe but are trying to get a flight back asap.
  • Spencer looks annoyed at Mel and tells her not to rush the 72 hours. She wants to stay for the evaluation (hmmm, ulterior motive?). Melissa tells Spencer that all this time she thought Spencer was just being mean and didn’t think that she was unwell (still not buying it). Spencer tells her that it’s a relief for both of them and appears suspicious of her sister.

The Brew

  • Em tells Aria and Hanna about Spencer. That Sully found her in Radley. They want to go see her but only family visits are allowed because of the mandatory psych eval.
  • Hanna get s photo text of Wilden & her mom the night Ashley was pulled over.

Radley

  • The medic is back, giving Spencer shotgun antibiotics. When she asks about tranqs, he tells her that they can’t give them tranqs before an eval.
  • Spencer then notices his ID. E. Lamb. Eddie Lamb. She calls out his name. (In the previous episode, Emily searched for an E Lamb in the police database, which means that someone with that name has a police record.)

Marin

  • Ashley and Hanna talk about Spencer, which makes Ashley want to cancel her NY seminar. A training seminar leading to a promotion that will relocate them to NY. Hanna doesn’t want her to cancel and wants to leave Rosewood. Ashley doesn’t want to leave her alone in the house so they agree that Hanna will be staying at Emily’s.

Downtown

  • Emily catches Sully as she exits her building, and asks about Spencer. Sully tells Em that Spencer is doing ok but cannot take visitors just yet. She then tells Em that Spencer said she saw a body in the woods and thinks it’s Toby. (What happened to doctor-patient confidentiality? And in a public place? I understand that Em is her friend but goodness.)
  • Sully thinks that Spence was in such an agitated state that she might not have known exactly what she saw. The police and rangers have checked the area but haven’t found anything (Ha!), They are also trying to contact Toby’s family to make sure that he’s alright.

School

  • Byron visits Ella at school, to discuss Aria and Ezra. Byron says that since he got him fired, so maybe he can talk to the Dean. Ella asks if he wants to. Byron replies with his true motives, that if they help stabilize Ezra’s family situation, he might end things with Aria. Ella says, “I suppose that’s true.” Then, Byron questions his own intentions.

Radley

  • Spencer is talking to Sully. Spencer doesn’t want to believe that Toby may be alive. She didn’t see the face, as Sully pointed out. Sully tries to help her make sense of what happened.
  • Spencer says that she wants to see her friends but Sully tells her she can’t until the eval is over. Then, they can determine if she will be released or further treatment is recommended.
  • Sully offers to pass on information to Emily. Spencer asks her to tell them that she misses them.

The Brew

  • Emily arrives to meet Shana and Miss Franklin. (Shana seems to have gone out of her way to introduce Em and MF. Why isn’t Paige there? Paige is a swimmer as well. This just seems odd. Shana and Em aren’t friends exactly.)
  • When Shana goes get drinks, MF & Em make small talk.

Radley

  • The medic is replacing Spencer’s bandages and she asks him if he has ever lost any of his badges. She also asks as to how the proximity badges work using a microchip. The medic explains to her that the questions she is asking are the ones he is supposed to report.
  • Then he reminds her that 72 hours is not a long time to wait, and then she’ll be free. He doesn’t think that Spencer is crazy.
  • Eddie eventually tells Spencer that there was some trouble with the old badges that they had to replace the whole system. When Spencer asks about the type of trouble referring to people going in and out of Radley, he doesn’t answer. (I take his non-answer as affirmation.)

Marin

  • Aria is with Hanna, in her room, who is packing a boat load of clothes for the three days she’ll be staying with Emily. While they talk about Wilden and his police car, Hanna mentions the possibility of her moving to NY.

The Brew

  • Shana and Em are taking photos with MF, before she leaves. MF has been extra giggly this whole time.
  • When MF leaves, Em tells Shana that she didn’t know that she’s also a swimmer. Shana casts doubt in Em by saying, “Paige didn’t tell you? Wonder why she never mentioned it.” (I wonder why Shana didn’t invite Paige either. I liked this character at first. Now, I’m not sure.)

Radley

  • Spencer and Eddie are talking about a boy and the “stolen” ID. Eddie asks why he might need the pass. Spencer says because he was visiting another patient in Radley, and was doing “out in the world” favors for her. She mentions Mona and asks if he knows her. Eddie says that Mona is hard to forget. (Curiouser, and curiouser.)
  • Then, Spencer tells Eddie that the boy’s name is Toby. Eddie stands to leave but eventually tells Spencer that they also had trouble with the visitor badges and traced it back to someone in the staff (Wren???). Spencer tries to get more information but Eddie says he can’t.
  • When E Lamb leaves, Spencer turns to look at the desk in her room. She moves a lamp to reveal carved text, “Will the circle be broken? Jakub”
  • Flashback to when Ali was alive and Mona was still nerdy. At church, an overly enthusiastic Mona sings with everyone in Church. The song is titled, “Will the Circle be UnBroken?" Ali sits right next to Spencer, as she—Ali—makes fun of Mona. After church, Ali continues to make fun of Mona and starts writing in her diary. Spencer wants to read it but Ali says that she has to wait until she’s dead (Perhaps a premonition. She seems to think that she will die young.). She tells Spence that she’s writing “them” for her, if she’s going to carry on after she’s gone. Ali tells Spencer that the contents are beyond gruesome. Scandalous.

Fitz

  • Byron visits Ezra. Ezra starts by saying that he didn’t tell Aria to ask help from them. Byron says they know. He is just there to help. He tells Ezra that he talked to the Dean at Hollis but there are no openings—but he still wants to help. Ezra asks why and Byron replies that it could just be habit…and mentions that he just wants to make amends. Then, they seem to agree.
  • Byron, afterward, asks Ezra about his son.

Radley

  • Spencer is by the piano again. Eddie sees her, walks over and starts talking about the Toby he knows. Met him when his mom was a patient at Radley. Spencer mentions Toby’s last name. Eddie asks her if she believes in coincidences.
  • 2 people with badges arrive and Eddie hurriedly tells Spencer to keep practicing and leaves.

School

  • The three liars are in the LGR converging as to how they can see Spencer and find out more about Toby. Aria is worried that maybe Spencer has really snapped, but didn’t think she would be the first between the four of them. Hanna thinks otherwise, blaming it on the downside for being too smart. Aria then tells Em that she never was the weakest link, Spencer was. (What an odd thing to say.)
  • Mona enters the LGR and pretends to not know where Spencer is. Aria answers her back and Mona appears genuinely surprised to find out that Spencer is at Radley (Mona looked worried too). Aria fights back and warns her but she gets called to the Principal’s office. (Finally, we get a bit of feistiness from Aria. I guess it’s a good start. I want more though.)
  • Principal Hackett is talking to Aria about Ezra, who has applied as a substitute teacher in the district and is most likely to teach at Rosewood when a substitute is needed. He mentions “apparent” social ties with him and Aria denies having current social connections with Ezra.

Radley

  • Spencer is writing in her notebook when Mona arrives with a tin of cookies.

Downtown

  • Ted and Ashley are talking about her training in NY. Ash apologizes for canceling & says that she’ll only be gone 2 days this time. Ted seemed perplexed and asks, where Ashley starts telling him of the upcoming promotion that might move them to NY. Ted honestly tells her that he wants her in Rosewood, looks across the street where a cop car is parked. He then asks her if there were any reason for her leaving Rosewood aside from the promotion, would she tell him about it? Ashley dodges the question. Ted tells her that he just wants to help.

Radley

  • Mona offers Spencer some cookies. Then, starts talking about Sybil, her favorite nurse who was very kind. “It’s important to reward kindness.” (Kind enough to help Mona leave the facility anytime she wanted?)
  • Spencer and Mona start arguing. Mona tells Spencer that she’s just visiting a friend (but they’re not friends so is she visiting another friend?).
  • Spencer asks Mona why she killed Toby and her facial expressions change. She hints that that’s not true and brings back the time when Spencer turned down her invitation to join the A Team. How much pain and loss occurred because she was being stubborn. But Mona believes in second chances (LOL). Spencer knows that Mona needs something from her.
  • Then, Mona says, “Ali was never pregnant. She thought she was and panicked but it was a false alarm.” (Mmmhmm.) Spencer asks Mona who told her that, and Mona replies with, “Ali told me.” (And she thinks she’s not crazy.) Mona tells Spencer that she has Ali’s diaries and brings out her tablet and says, “Remember?” as she points and scrolls through the entries. (She is referring to the diaries Spencer found in A’s Lair in S2 E25 UnmAsked.)
  • She tells Spencer that she doesn’t have all of them but she knows where the rest are. Spencer tries to grab the tablet but Mona pulls back. Then she tells Spencer that she—Mona—has the answers to their questions, and questions they haven’t thought of. Spencer tells Mona to leave her alone but Mona pursues. Mona taunts Spencer saying that Spence needs her to put the puzzle pieces together. Spencer tells her that she has nothing left to lose. They already think she’s crazy. Mona closes in and tells her, “You’re not crazy. You’re as sane as I am.” (LOL, Omg, Mona is brilliantly creepy.)

Fields

  • Ashley drops off Hanna at Emily’s and leaves for her flight to NY. Emily complains about the amount of clothes Hanna brought with her.
  • Wilden arrives and Em tells Hanna to ignore him. Hanna says, “Sometimes you poke the bear. Sometimes the bear pokes you.” (That’s a reference to The Big Lebowski. Substitute poke with Eat.)
  • Wilden talks to Hanna. He just wants the car back, then he will not cause them any more trouble. (I bet he’s hiding something—or someone—in the car.)

Radley

  • Spencer is at a group therapy session and fesses up about hiding. Dr. Sully tries to encourage her but Spencer realizes the intensity of her problems. She talks about being done, but being able to keep going despite the worst thing happening to you. She asks, “What do you have to change inside to survive? Who do you have to become?” (Ahem. Spencer 2.0. She has been a bit lax lately.)
  • She apologizes, and when she does, she realizes something. She looks up, seeing her friends (not because she’s cray but because she’s thinking of them). She says sorry and says that they don’t know who she has become and they can’t count on her anymore. (I see this simply meaning that she just doesn’t want other people to depend on her too much.)
