Season 3, Episode 19 What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted

School

• Hanna, Aria, and Emily are by the lockers discussing Spencer, who’s been MIA from class. They’ve tried contacting Toby. No response.
• Then, they talk about Em’s red coat flashback & Hanna mentions seeing her across the street from her fake interview.
• In the courtyard, they see Spencer arguing with Andrew. They kicked her out of the Academic Decathlon team because she hasn’t been reviewing with the team.
• Spencer confronts Mona. (Mona’s crazed look is back)
• Back in the hallway, Em approaches Spencer by her locker. Spencer refuses to talk, holding back tears. She takes her sunglasses, puts them on, and finds a message for her. (see photo stack)

The Brew

• Em is working. Aria and Hanna are seated—Aria trying to talk to Hanna about Spencer’s AD predicament. Hanna is locating a stable, which leads to a conversation about Uncle Jaimie & Caleb.
• Aria remembers the AD adviser: Horowitz. And thinks Ella can talk to her about Spencer.
• Aria gets a call from Dianne Fitz. She panics but answers her phone. Dianne is looking for Wesley. Aria lies, DF hangs up.
• Cece is at The Brew. When Emily tries talking to her, she says that she’s in a rush because she is meeting a photographer for the shop’s website. Cece asks Em what’s wrong and Em mentions Wilden. Cece starts being evasive and rushes to leave.

Hastings

• Spencer is making a veggie smoothie when Andrew arrives. (Well, well, well, he knows where she lives.) He explains the AD issue, being that the internal tension between her and cray-Mona is not good for the team. Spencer wants to make a deal. She wants Andrew to rescind his vote, if he beats her in Strip-Quiz. (A-ha.)

Stables

• Hanna visits Jaimie, via a two-hour drive. She confronts him about Caleb. He doesn’t deny it and asks if Caleb knows. She asks why he hasn’t said anything to Caleb. He explains that it’s not that easy, given his track record. Police record, et al. (Apparently, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.) Hanna tries to convince him to talk to Caleb.

Hastings

• Strip-Quiz is on. Spencer appears to be winning.
• Emily arrives and sees a nervous semi-naked Andrew grabbing his clothes. Em accuses Spencer of sleeping with him. She questions Spencer’s motives, with cupcakes in hand (lol). Then, they argue about Toby. Em is just trying to help. But Spencer can’t tell them yet. And, she doesn’t want them to talk to him.

Fitz

• The apartment is a mess. A huge mess. Wes tries to cleanup while he packs. Aria is there, watching. She eventually tells him that DF called. Wes tells her that DF already caught him at 7am in the morning. Aria asks why DF would call to ask her if she already knows. Wes says, to test and trap her.
• As Wes packs, Aria asks where he’s going. He says, Spain…Hallifax? Hallifax. (Camera pans to his bag suspiciously. Why is it so heavy?)
• Aria asks him why he doesn’t stay at Ezra’s. Wes hasn’t heard from him, Aria has been getting texts. She’s a bit worried but Wes tells her not to read into it.
• Cece calls Aria asking if she is still friends with the photographer (Jenna’s birthday) because the photographer she met today was a failure. But, instead of asking for the photographer’s phone, she asks Aria to take photos for her. Aria asks if she can bring an assistant, while Wes is raiding Ezra’s cupboards for canned goods.

Marin

• Caleb is having a fit while discussing Jaimie with Hanna. Ashley arrives but stays in the hallway, listening in. When Caleb leaves, she asks Hanna what was going on.

School

• Jason is in the classroom when Em walks in. They discuss Spencer and what she said about Ali, memorial night. Em mentions Cece, which makes Jason think that she set Ali up with Wilden (Jason’s nostrils are flaring at this point). Em says that Cece doesn’t know who the beach hottie is, then mentions the photo she found of Wilden at the Police Station. Jason associates this to the collage Ali gave their dad. They speculate. Em tries to hold him back but Jason already called Wilden, leaving him voicemail. They plan to look for the photograph in the collage.

Hastings

• Spencer wants a banana (badly, or is testing her telekinetic powers.)
  
  
• Melissa is preparing dinner when a little bird of a snake called Wren arrives. Awkward greetings, check! He is there for Spencer, so Melissa disappears with her dinner (I love how they can make Mel look so innocent in this episode). Someone called Wren about Spencer. Spence asks who and finds out that it’s not one of the liars. (Mona! Hmmm.)
• Seeing how Wren is reacting, she sees this as an opportunity, She asks Wren to go out with her. He looks (genuinely) happy. (Seriously, he is so desperate. Either he’s just desperate to be with one of them of he is just a failed A Team member).

Marin

• Hanna calls Jaimie, perhaps to try and cancel but changes her mind. As she gets ready to leave and meet him, Caleb shows and asks to go with her.

The Brew

• Hanna and Caleb have been waiting long. Jaimie is still not there. Caleb tells Hanna stories of his childhood.

The Boutique

• Aria and Wes are helping Cece take photos of…stuff. While Wes checks the basement for props, Cece offers Aria wine and asks about Ezra.
• Cece, finding this an opportunity to manipulate Aria, asks about her relationship with Ezra. She successfully plants doubts in Aria’s mind. When Wes returns, Cece conveniently offers to go “hunt down some dinner.” (I’m guessing she was hoping to catch something. There might have been a hidden camera somewhere.)

The Brew

• When Haleb are just about ready to leave, Jaimie arrives. Hanna is at the counter holding the unfinished cake and orders decaf coffee. Jaimie goes to Caleb and asks him to stay. They try to make funny conversation, using Hanna as the topic. (Interestingly, these two really classy-not gentlemen are making fun of her.)

DiLaurentis Home

• Em and Jason drive to the DiLaurentis home and finds the porch stacked with bottles of whiskey. (See follow up post later today about the whiskey order in Dead to Me)
• Jason seems pissed, more than anything else and chooses to throw out these bottles. (I would’ve donated them) Someone in the background is watching them. Em gets a text suggesting that Jason kept a few bottles. (see photo stack for whiskey on the porch and text message)

Wrencer

• Spencer and Wren are on their way to Lewisburg, where the Academic Decathlon will be held.

The Boutique

• Aria is taking photos while drinking wine with Wes. They appear a bit buzzed. Cece is taking too long. While Wes tries to help by moving lights, he accidentally hits the wine bottle which spills on the white carpet. They try to clean it, unsuccessfully.

DiLaurentis Condo

• Em and Jason head over to where Jason’s dad has moved. We see boxes everywhere. They search through them, hoping to find Ali’s collage with the cape may photo Jason mentioned earlier.
• Em asks Jason about the whiskey on the porch. Who might have done something like that. Jason says Ali. (We all know that Ali learned these tricks from Cece) Em also warns Jason about his friendship with Mona. Jason tells her that Mona is not a friend. She’s a link. A link to whoever took Alison’s remains. (So, if this is all true, he is playing a dangerous game of detective.)

Marin

• Hanna arrives home. Ashley is clearing the dishwasher. Hanna proudly tells her about the events of tonight’s reunion. She asks Ashley about construction at the church. She wants Ashley to recommend Jaimie so he can be closer to Caleb.

DiLaurentis Condo

• Jason and Em find Ali’s collage. The find the specific photo Jason is referring to. In that photo, they see Wilden, Ali, and Cece (see photo stack). So now they know Cece was lying when she said she didn’t know (It’s Cece. What do you expect?). Em wonders why Cece would lie and Jason says Cece always has her own motives. She might have been hiding something. Something about the night Ali disappeared.
• Flashback: A drunken Jason sees Melissa by the infamous tree talking to a blonde individual. He yells and calls for Ali. After a few attempts, the person turns around and we find out that it’s Cece. When Jason looks, the two have walked away.
• (First of all, Ali is not in good terms with Melissa so that conversation between Ali & Mel would not have been possible. They seemed to be talking intently, but not arguing. We know that Melissa & Alison are not besties. Second, Cece has a different body structure. Next, the tops may be similar in color and style but there are subtle differences, like the straps and the shade of yellow. It is obvious, however, that they had them wear similar clothing that night. For what purpose? We will find out eventually.)
• Em asks Jason why he never said anything to the cops. He says that he was never sure about what he saw, and he didn’t want to be a suspect. (Another point here. We know from Emily’s flashbacks that they get mixed up. So we can’t trust these flashbacks to be completely accurate. They may show a portion of the truth, but they can be twisted as well.)

Wrencer

• The two arrive at Lewisburg Roadside Inn and enter the Home Kitchen. Spencer asks Wren to get a table as she sneaks into the room where the Academic Decathlon will be held. Andrew and Horowitz, worried, spots her and tries to make her leave but she says that she is there to wish the team captain good luck. Spencer approaches Mona and the verbal gymnastics begin. Spencer starts threatening her, while Mona continues to taunt her. And so it happens. Spencer loses control and violently goes for Mona. (Woohoo!) Wren enters the room, and helps Andrew stop the brawl. He drags Spencer out of the room.
  
  

The Boutique

• Aria and Wes are still trying to figure out how to clean up the rug. We says he’ll stay and sleep on top of it instead of the backseat of his car. Aria realizes that he had been lying earlier. He made up the story about his friend in Philly. She tells him that he’ll stay at their house.
• Cece calls Aria. From her car (see photo stack). She lies and tells her that her car was towed. (Hmmm.) So Aria says that they’re getting ready to pack up and she will just send the photos.

Church

• Haleb are at Church, waiting for Ted and Jaimie. While they wait, Caleb thanks her and kisses her in church (really classy). Ashley sees them and tells them that Ted & Jaimie are finalizing numbers and will meet them at home for dinner. Hanna makes an offering before they leave (see photo stack for bill).

DiLaurentis Condo

• Em and Jason leave the Condo and enter the elevator. It powers down. They’re stuck.

Wrencer

• On the drive home, Spencer’s phone rings. She refuses to answer but Wren does anyway. Melissa is wondering and Wren easily lies about the night’s events.

Montgomery

• Aria and Wes talk about Cece’s rug while Aria prepares sheets and a pillow for Wes. We asks to borrow some reading material and starts quoting poetry. (Baby Fitz is like Big Brother Fitz)
• Aria thanks him for sticking around and they kiss. (Yep, they kiss) Before long, they both pull back agreeing that “they can’t do this”. Wes says goodnight and heads for the couch. Aria closes her door, leans on it, a bit startled.

DiLaurentis Condo

• The two are still stuck in the elevator. They eventually pry open the elevator doors and after a few scared attempts, Emily escapes. As soon as she does, the elevator door closes and the carriage drops with Jason inside.

Marin

• Pizza guy arrives and Ashley asks for change. Jaimie offers to pay for dinner. As he takes out money to pay, we see the same bill Hanna placed in the offering box at the church (LOL, see photo stack. As much as we all suspect him stealing it, it’s possible that Ted took the offering and used it as a down payment for his services. Giving him the benefit of the doubt even though my gut is telling me he is a thief).
• Hanna, Aria, and Spencer get a text from Em: SOS.

Hospital

• Jason is alive, but badly injured. Em is right by his side.
• Jason tells Em that she and Spencer were right about the NAT. That someone is out to get all of them. He tells her that the photo they took from the collage is gone. (And whyyyy did they not take a snapshot?)
• Em leaves to get water for Jason, who seemed eager to get rid of her. Outside the room, the liars arrive and ask how they are doing. Em tells them what happened, including about the photo.
• Spencer apologizes.
• The nurse approaches them and asks where Jason is. He’s gone.

A’s Antics

• A#1 is cutting photos of the liars and sticking them to whiskey bottles. It first points at Aria (see photo stack) but A#2 points it to Spencer, opens the bottle, and then pours into two glasses.
  
  

Additional Thoughts

• When A texted Em, did she tell Jason to save a few bottles? If so, are these same bottles the ones we see in the end? Does that make Jason one of the A Team members—or at least increases his chances of being one of them?
• Stacking those bottles is not a one-person job.
• Not entirely discrediting the twin theory, it is also possible that Cece is the one who killed Ali. The twin might still be alive. That said, we don’t know if it was Ali or Courtney that was killed. If the twin theory will not be supported, it may be that Cece is indeed the one in charge. She might be after who killed Ali and think it’s one of the liars. With that, she might be taking revenge against the liars and simply using the A Team members to get what she wants.
• If the A scene happened that night, it is most likely that Mona was not one of them.
• I don’t think the spinning of the bottle alluded to a game of truth or dare. I think it just points to what they are cheering to. They’ve broken Spencer, so they are toasting to that.
• As to the choice of drink, whiskey is typically associated with men but there are women (such as moi) who prefer that over vodka. So we can’t discount that those As might have been of mixed gender. We also know that Cece does not have a preferred drink. She’s had wine and beer in different scenes. Who says that she doesn’t like vodka or whiskey?
• Is Cece responsible for the Whiskey Stack?
• Where is Toby? Where is Jenna? Where is Lucas? Where is Mike?
• If Melissa and Wren are on the A Team, were they working together?
